Mainstreaming Alternative Health

I think we need to embrace alternative healthcare practitioners and options. Not all of them, but modalities that focus on a) maintaining health, and that b) take the whole person into consideration. I think some of these modalities, in coordination with your regular health care practitioner, can offer long term benefits that ultimately lower health care costs.

What would happen if your insurance company *required* you to see a nutritionist, a naturopath, and guided meditation practitioner at regular intervals? The combined result of long term, alternative guidance could possibly lead to a longer, more health life.

Really like this idea! Would like to see how healthcare providers might partner with companies to offer employee access to these alternative healthcare practitioners as a preventative health incentive.

Well, REQUIREMENTS might be a bit stiff! But I do like the idea of encouraging alternative medicine both as a treatment and a preventative method. So many people refuse to go to the doctor for various reasons, but alternative medicine offers them – well, an alternative means to improve their health and lifestyle without feeling as invasive as a physician practitioner.

I have great insurance coverage, but I don't think I have much as far as alternative medicine options. I kind of want to look into it now.

I think it is a great idea for everyone to thoroughly study their medical and mental health benefit offerings offered through their employer. Some may be surprised at what is actually covered. I know that my benefit plan through BJC offers nutritional counseling services for certain health conditions, as well as smoking cessation and other services. Other employers in the area offer these benefits as well. In general, employers are offering more wellness-related services, like biometric screenings at health fairs, and partnering with health systems like BJC to provide them.

While some of the benefits information can be a bit overwhelming to read, I think it is worth the time, and would encourage everyone to check out and know your benefits.
