prostate cancer screenings

The movement to back off prostate cancer screenings to avoid being overly aggressive in treatment concerns me. I get that there are times when it might be wiser to avoid treatment, especially when age is a consideration, but I really don’t understand taking a stance to discourage younger men (in their 40s) from monitoring their prostate health and giving themselves the best chance of catching it early.

I'm about to turn 40. If my doc doesn't think I need a test yet should I ask for it any way? No cancer in the family yet but a lot of prostate problems.

Hi Jay,

That's a great question, thanks for posting. That would be something for you and your physician to discuss – if you are seeking information about prostate problems, including cancer, visit our Urology section on the website: http://www.barnesjewish.org/urology.
