This person is a hero because:
Councilwoman Fraser advocates for restrictions on smoking
Barbara's Story:

St. Louis County Councilwoman, 5th District
St. Louis, Missouri

Councilwoman Barbara Fraser has championed the cause of smoke free environments in public places including restaurants. She knows that smoking and second hand smoke are direct causes of human illness, and greatly increase the risk of diseases of the lung and heart that would otherwise be avoidable if only there were more smoke-free environments. Barbara is a health care hero!!

Hats off to Councilwoman Fraser for her leadership in giving the residents of St. Louis County the opportunity to let their voices be heard on this very important issue. As a resident of the City of St. Louis, I will be watching (and keeping my fingers crossed) for the outcome of Tuesday's election. If you live in St. Louis County, please vote Yes on Prop N.

Leaders are people who challenge the opposition with respect, not because it's the easy thing to do, but because they believe it to be in the best interest of an overall objective. Congratulations to Councilwoman Fraser for her commitment to cleaner air. The overwhelming vote in St. Louis County reflects that Missouri is ready for clean air.

When Councilwoman Barbara Fraser defeated former Councilman Kurt Odenwald in an election two years ago I thought all smoke-free air progress by St. Louis County Council had come to an end. I was delighted to find that Barbara was every bit as much a fighter for this issue as Kurt had been. And unlike Kurt, who tried unsuccessfully in both 2005 and 2006, she succeeded in pulling off a lopsided victory for a good St. Louis County ordinance at the polls on November 3. That will automatically trigger similar legislation in the City of St. Louis, once it is signed into law by Mayor Slay. We're talking about providing mandatory protections to roughly 1.3 million residents in the metro St. Louis area, about one-quarter of the entire population of the state. The main downside, apart from some exemptions which we should come back and remove, is the wait: The effective date is not until January 2011. Congratulations, Barbara!
