This person is a hero because:
As a heart transplant mentor, she gives information and hope to young people who are facing transplant.
Valerie's Story:

Valerie is all about "giving back." She had a heart transplant at St. Louis Children's Hospital 10 years ago. Since coming to work at Barnes-Jewish Hospital two years ago, Valerie's volunteered her time to mentor other young people who are facing heart transplants. Having access to someone who has actually lived through the experience is a godsend to these patients, who are often full of questions and anxiety. Valerie answers the questions honestly - letting them know that the process has its ups and downs. But just seeing her - someone who has been through transplant and literally "lived to tell the tale" - is an enormous relief and inspiration.
