Valerie is all about "giving back." She had a heart transplant at St. Louis Children's Hospital 10 years ago. Since coming to work at Barnes-Jewish Hospital two years ago, Valerie's volunteered her time to mentor other young people who are facing heart transplants. Having access to someone who has actually lived through the experience is a godsend to these patients, who are often full of questions and anxiety. Valerie answers the questions honestly – letting them know that the process has its ups and downs. But just seeing her – someone who has been through transplant and literally "lived to tell the tale" – is an enormous relief and inspiration.

Thank you Valerie. Your experience gives you the credibility to support our patients and it takes a lot of "heart" to use your very personal experience to help others. You are an inspiration to all of us.
