Emergency rooms are filled with people who could & should be seen in urgent care centers or their Doctor's offices, this makes the real emergencies wait much longer than is necessary. Maybe we should have "Urgent care" areas affixed to the hospitals since this is where most patients tend to go. Triage could then have patients go to the appropriate site. more >>>

When accompanying friends and family to hospital, I would say that always there is an intake where the patient is to recount the diagnoses, medications and past history over and over again. When one is sick or is accompanied by someone who is not aware of everything, many important parts of the history can be missed and/or not recorded. This is dangerous and can be easily rectified by the electronic medical record. The patient's total sum of diagnoses, medications (listed by date of prescription), and past history by date need to be a... more >>>

Modern medicine is effective in taking care of people who are already afflicted with serious disease or trauma. Preventative and alternative medicine (such as acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic, oriental medicine, herbology, ayurvedic medicine, etc) are often effective to keep people stay not only healthy, but also improving the quality of their lives by boosting overall well-being in both mind and body. We would like to see the new health care system to welcome and integrate preventative and alternative medicine practices and ... more >>>

Doctor Waits I had an appointment today at 8.30, and knowing that I have new insurance, I made sure that I got there a little early so I could fill out any paper work. Well, that was a fine and dandy decision, had it actually worked. First, it took them about 30 to 45 minutes to get my card back to me. Then I sat and waited some more. Then, I was kindly escorted back to one of the rooms where I sat and waited for another 20 minutes before someone came in and told me that I needed to wear some shorts. Ok, fine, I put on the little blu... more >>>

As I write this note, I am en route to Washington, D.C. I, along with eight colleagues from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Catholic Healthcare Association (CHA) are meeting with President Obama at the White House this afternoon. A Year Ago It has been one full year since the United States Congress began its work on health care reform. At that time, in poll after poll, Americans cited the need for all citizens to have guaranteed access to affordable health insurance coverage, while maintaining in... more >>>

My experience at BJC was a terrible one. I arrived at the emergency room at Missouri Baptist Hospital at 3 pm with extreme lower abdomen pains. I checked in and then sat in the waiting room for almost nine hours. Finally, I received some pain medication from a nurse and then sat in another room for 2 hours. After almost 11 hours, they did a CT scan and a saw a Docter for about four minutes. There was no physical exam and only superficial questions. The diagnosis provided, I found later, was completely wrong. So in all, I spent 13 hours to se... more >>>

Recently I was watching a news segment and saw a report on fish oil concerns. It felt so terrible to find that some of the good brands of fish oil are using chemicals, PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) and industrial chemicals that were banned in the 1970s because they caused cancer and birth defects. My family relies on fish oil for the omega-3 fatty acids, and we have been consuming fish oil since ages. The report presented a test of 10 different fish oil supplements and each contained PCBs. While searching for PCB, I found that, due to PCB... more >>>

I had a DREAM several years ago and in my dream the surgen was using a long pin point type of tool to insert into the skin and project down to the point in the body where the cancer was... In my Dream This tool was able to freeze the surrounding area in which the cancer existed.. after freezing the area, the surgen then cut the skin and cut down to the frozen area and was able to remove all of the cancer as it was frozen and did not spread while being cut away ?????? I don't know if something like this could be possible, but I do believe in... more >>>

Why is there so much advertising concerning medications that not only have to be prescribed by a physician, but costs the advertising company money that they don't need to spend? The more advertising money spent, the higher the prescriptions are. And why in the world do the drug companies advertise Prescription medication? People can't go out and get it, it needs a doctor's prescription so why not leave it up to the doctors and save money? more >>>

Recently I was reading an article in Chicago Tribune regarding the cancer risks caused by CT Scan. I was shocked to know the effects of CT scan on human body and how much it's prevalent in the country. The article talked almost every detail about the CT scan effects on human body. CT scan showers plethora of X-Rays on human body that can cause cancer in the long run. Though doctors also explained that people should not be afraid of CT scan rather go for this only if it's essential or required. There are various CT Scan centers where the oper... more >>>

Telephone survey is way too many questions. Twenty five questions! and after EACH ONE the same instruction " Based on your experience, would you rate your care as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor". Someone who can't remember the instructions they just heard 10 seconds ago probably can't participate in a survey very well anyway. It doesn't matter that BJC is happy with their survey tool and has used it for years, it doesn't matter that the interviewer follows the established protocol......it matters that the survey is annoying, patron... more >>>

.....discharging them within 20 minutes of the time the doctor says "You can go home today". Empower the patient to let their nurse know the doctor has discharged them....otherwise the order may be buried for hours. All the good things that happened during the stay can be obliterated by a 3 hr wait for paperwork to process after hearing those wonderful words, " I think you're well enough to go home"! more >>>

When I pass by several of the BJC hospitals & facilities late at night, there are a lot of lights on in the doctor's buildings and ancillary buildings. The hospital I work in has lights on continually in empty rooms & offices that are unoccupied. I think if we were more diligent about turning off these lights, we could save a pretty significant amount of money and also energy - since we are trying to go "green". more >>>

My physician recently ordered iron injections to assist in raising my hemoglobin levels which are critically low. He said I will feel much better after these injections. When I tried to schedule these injections, it took four days before I could talk to a scheduler. No one returned my message phone calls. As it is, I cannot get my first injection until March 23, which is 19 days away, because there is only one person in the 5th floor Siteman center who does these injections, and she only works Mon, Tues, and Wed. The person who answered ... more >>>

I was navigating thru this site and was somewhat shocked when I clicked on th catagory "caregiver" and got this reply "There are no blogs to display." In "making medicine better", discussing health care, debating reform, or just living a "day in the life." I believe caregiving is at the foundation of what we do. We provide "Exceptional Care". I've worked as a patient advocate. I spent a lot of hours in the emergency department. The challenges to provide quality care were the only constant. I often heard from family members when we missed the... more >>>

I took my 'significant other' to the emergency room at St. Anthony's Hospital a few months ago. He was expreiencing difficult breathing. A nurse put an oxygen apparatus in his nose. We waited in the room for 4 hours before anyone came in to see him. It was freezing in the room and they closed the curtain between the room and the nurses desks. They took him for a chest xray and said he had fluid on his lungs. We stayed in the refrigerated room for two more hours. Then they did an EKG and we sat for three more hours. After readin... more >>>

As someone who was once training in the professional field, I understand the importance of taking pride in the fact that you hone and develop your craft, test vigorously, and learn the "in and outs" of the field, yet I am a little wary of doctors who do not fully listen to their patients on the symptoms that they have. I am the first to admit that doctors possess a knowledge that we don't as lay people. However, when you live with your body for years on end, you tend to know the internal workings like clock work. And, usually, when one ... more >>>

How about lets start by making healthcare affordable. The vast majority of the population makes less than 30,000 dollars per year. Doctors salaries excess 200,000 plus on average. How can you expect to reap a harvest from people who have nothing, barely surviving in almost all situations, especially in the world of today. Are you stupid? Or is it that as a so called medical professional (I'm a mechanic by the way, Automotive master physician) If I know your a doctor, especially one with an attitude, I'm going to stick it to you, ... more >>>
