I think the prescription drug advertisements are both good and bad. As per the good part, it gives us the knowledge and description about various medicines available. Imagine how many medicines do we know even if we are prescribed that medicine. It is always what the doctor gives and we take. But with advertisement we come to know about the medicine and the usage. Now, the...

Cathy, as I was reading the article, it mentioned that if your ailment essentially requires a CT Scan then you must do it. Because some ailments are better be detected rather than overlooked just for the scan risk. You can always ask your doctors before going for the scanning. BJC has good doctors, I think it will help you for sure. My concern for posting this article was to...

Connie, your dream sounds a lot like something called cryosurgery (I think) which basically is freezing and used sometimes in special cases to treat prostate cancer. I'm not a doctor or in the medical field but my guess is it works best when they know exactly where the cancer is and that it's contained to an area. Maybe somebody who actually knows more could we...

I had a DREAM several years ago and in my dream the surgen was using a long pin point type of tool to insert into the skin and project down to the point in the body where the cancer was... In my Dream This tool was able to freeze the surrounding area in which the cancer existed.. after freezing the area, the surgen then cut the skin and cut down to the frozen area and was ab...

Totally agree, Deb. Isn't there such a thing as a motion detector that could be installed in rooms? After a certain amount of time that there has been no movement, the lights automatically turn off. Not sure how much that kind of system costs though.

Sure, doctors still have to prescribe the meds, but like everything in life...knowledge is power. I agree with the advertising you see on TV. I'm a 30-something female and can tell you that my parents, although in good health, do have some issues with high blood pressure, osteoporosis, etc. Although these complications aren't affecting my body personally...you can ...

It is interesting that this topic should come up, as I would be curious to know if my cancer was a direct result of numerous CT scans along with many pyelograms. About nine years ago, following a hysterctomy, I developed a hematoma that was pressing on the ureter. To make a long story short, the hematoma would not reabsorb and was closely monitored by both the gynecologist...

Why is there so much advertising concerning medications that not only have to be prescribed by a physician, but costs the advertising company money that they don't need to spend? The more advertising money spent, the higher the prescriptions are. And why in the world do the drug companies advertise Prescription medication? People can't go out and get it, it needs a doctor...

At Barnes-Jewish Hospital, we just did a podcast with radiologist Andrew Bierhals on this topic. His message is similar to your post. I have the link here: http://www.barnesjewish.org/Video/View.aspx?videoID=184

Surely there are better ways to survey patient satisfaction than a post visit phone call! Many times, these surveys are the only opportunity for a patient to voice a complaint or concern about their care. Wouldn't it be a better idea to ask me these questions while I'm in the hospital? With all of the new technology these days, the surveys could be conducted in ...

Recently I was reading an article in Chicago Tribune regarding the cancer risks caused by CT Scan. I was shocked to know the effects of CT scan on human body and how much it's prevalent in the country. The article talked almost every detail about the CT scan effects on human body. CT scan showers plethora of X-Rays on human body that can cause cancer in the long run. Though ...

Telephone survey is way too many questions. Twenty five questions! and after EACH ONE the same instruction " Based on your experience, would you rate your care as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor". Someone who can't remember the instructions they just heard 10 seconds ago probably can't participate in a survey very well anyway. It doesn't matter that BJC is happy wit...

.....discharging them within 20 minutes of the time the doctor says "You can go home today". Empower the patient to let their nurse know the doctor has discharged them....otherwise the order may be buried for hours. All the good things that happened during the stay can be obliterated by a 3 hr wait for paperwork to process after hearing those wonderful words, " I think ...

Craig, I can't speak for every doctors office but I can speak to ours. We will explain and apologize to patients about their delay. We do that many times daily. It's called taking the HEAT and if you work at BJC you will know what that means. I agree with posting and communicating to patients about being prepared for their visit. I am actually working on a pamphl...

like all things, it comes down to communication and attitude. take the time to tell me we're running late and show some interest in what that might be doing to my schedule and I'll bend over backwards to cut you some slack. act as if I should be grateful that you're seeing me in the first place, and I'm not as happy. Your advice for being prepared is g...
