All the posturing about ending Obama-care and the new "scary S" word...socialism really bugs me. If we understood that access to healthcare is simply a basic human right then all this bunk would stop! As a hospital group I'm sure you see your share of absolute horrible cases. Is there some way to use your voice as health care providers to help change this attitude? ...

Robert, Thank you for taking the time to post your situation on Make Medicine Better.org. We're sorry you've experienced frustration with our parking facilities on campus. We appreciate this type of feedback related to how we service our patients, and how we might improve on those services. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital we have patient advocates who are here to l...

Though I don't have answers to your questions, I find this one: "Why is a plastic surgeon more likely to be accepted in a hospital than someone who actually has a purpose for existing?" terribly insulting to that profession. Plastic surgeons do a lot of work to help patients recover from trauma, burns, breast cancer, etc. and to suggest the have...

If you have a broken leg - you go to a hospital. If you are about to give birth - you go to a hospital. If you have a heart attack - you go to a hospital. If you have the flu - you go to a hospital. If you have cancer - you go to the hospital. But if you have a cavity - you don't go to a hospital. If you have problems seeing clearly - you don't go to a hospital. ...

Now that Missouri has soundly spoken out against federal health reform as passed by the current congress, will your views change? Or, do you insist that you know better than 70 % of the voting public in your state. I await a new posting. Russ Stringer

Hi Jay, That's a great question, thanks for posting. That would be something for you and your physician to discuss - if you are seeking information about prostate problems, including cancer, visit our Urology section on the website: http://www.barnesjewish.org/urology.

My wife is in the hospital. She is having pain (Diciest?). She had received some pain medicine, which allowed her to sleep. The new "rounds" doctor came in; woke her up; and performed the interview procedure. The procedure was professional, and I assume it provided sufficient information. My minor suggestion, concerns the doctor's room exit process. While...

I'm about to turn 40. If my doc doesn't think I need a test yet should I ask for it any way? No cancer in the family yet but a lot of prostate problems.

Hi Marty, Thanks for posting about your recent experience. Unfortunately, sometimes doctor appointments run long due to the nature of each patient's visit. Additionally, the amount of time that the physician dedicates to listening to the patient, which helps to diagnose and determine the correct treatment, can also affect the schedule. Our staff does their very be...

You know, when that happens to me I feel at least a little better if someone just acknowledges that I've been waiting. Doesn't totally make up for it, but it helps.

I have a really novel idea. Why not trying to see people at least somewhat close to their appointment time ? I recently had an eye doctor appointment at 2:15. I was told to be there at 2:00. I was finally seen at 3:30. There was no emergency just what I suspect was overbooking. The doctor was fantastic, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the yo-yos.

Hi Marty, Thanks for posting - we will pass along your compliment to Dr. Jick, who will no doubt be thrilled to receive the feedback. Recently(Tuesday August 3rd) I had an eye appointment in the office of Dr.Cohen. I saw Dr.Jick who was fantastic, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the people. I was told to be there at 2:00p.m. My appointment was at 2:15. I was finally called at 3:28. This is ridiculous. Needless to say I am very irritated. There was no emergency just what I suspect was ove...

I don't live in Missouri so I'm interested to hear the local take on what happened with last night's vote. So much support for Obama and reform during the election and after...is this a sign of a shift...or something different?

Mr. Lipstein Writes "Does that violate your principle of freedom? Should insurance companies be free to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions?" Yes and yes. I would love to be able to buy insurance against pre-existing conditions, upon which I am sure clever actuaries could put a nice, tidy figure.

First, let me thank everyone for the thoughtfulness of the posts. We do not agree, but I appreciate disagreements that are not disagreeable. We are neighbors first, and this is evident in the discussion. Ms. Sewell - I reject your premise. Obamacare, for whatever good intentions it has, infringes on my freedoms (and, with your indulgence I stand as a proxy for all,). ...

My only comment, after reading these entries is: What would happen if we repeated the same discussion, but changed the words "medical insurance" to "fire protection" or "police protection"? One problem I have with the current culture, is that everything is framed in the terms of capitalism, as if this is the only way to run a society. Politics a...
