Now that Missouri has soundly spoken out against federal health reform as passed by the current congress, will your views change? Or, do you insist that you know better than 70 % of the voting public in your state. I await a new posting. Russ Stringer

I don't live in Missouri so I'm interested to hear the local take on what happened with last night's vote. So much support for Obama and reform during the election and after...is this a sign of a shift...or something different?

Mr. Lipstein Writes "Does that violate your principle of freedom? Should insurance companies be free to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions?" Yes and yes. I would love to be able to buy insurance against pre-existing conditions, upon which I am sure clever actuaries could put a nice, tidy figure.

First, let me thank everyone for the thoughtfulness of the posts. We do not agree, but I appreciate disagreements that are not disagreeable. We are neighbors first, and this is evident in the discussion. Ms. Sewell - I reject your premise. Obamacare, for whatever good intentions it has, infringes on my freedoms (and, with your indulgence I stand as a proxy for all,). ...

My only comment, after reading these entries is: What would happen if we repeated the same discussion, but changed the words "medical insurance" to "fire protection" or "police protection"? One problem I have with the current culture, is that everything is framed in the terms of capitalism, as if this is the only way to run a society. Politics a...

Dale, I appreciate the passion of your argument. Another aspect of Proposition C to consider is the issue of whether or not the government has a legal right to compel insurance companies to gauarantee issue of health insurance to everybody who applies, regardless of their pre-existing conditions. The law says that the insurance company cannot discriminate against either...

Dale, I see where you're coming from, though I have to question - how would *you* suggest we care for those who have no health insurance? I'm entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - at least two of those inalienable rights would certainly be infringed upon if I were to walk into an ER with a major traumatic injury and be told, "Sorry, can...

I'm sorry you are tired of it, but your fatigue does not change the fact that socialism fails every time it is tried - and this is an attempt at socialism. It is arrogant to think that we are somehow more capable of making it work than all the other failed attempts in history. Individual rights do come before everything - these are our inalienable rights. Men and w...

I am tired of folks trying to scare others with the fear of socialism and loss of inalienable rights. What I find an affront to the dignity of humans is the current condition of health care. Mr. Warren seems to think that individual rights come before everything. While I certainly cherish my rights, I also recognise that living in a society means that you are not an island. ...

We do not have positive rights under the law - we may have them as a matter of conscience - I am compelled by faith to render help if I can, but I cannot be compelled by law to do so - at least under the current constitutional agreement. If we want to have a nationwide debate on a constitutional set of "positive rights" then let's have it, but we cannot prete...

Individual rights and freedoms are fine if they don't interfer with the well being of the society as a whole. If everyone in this country had the common sense to realize that health coverage is a necessity not a luxury it would not be a problem. Unfortunately, that is not the case. We must have mandatory health coverage or we will all suffer.

Dale, I understand your argument about rights and freedoms. I've had many discussions, as I'm sure you have, about health reform with friends, family, and co-workers. One problem with arguing against health reform based on the freedom principle is that the government has already established that health care organizations are not free to decide to give or wit...

Respectfully - unfair is not unconstitutional, but requiring people to purchase something that they may not want is. It is unwise to not have insurance, but being unwise is not a matter for the government to involve itself. We cannot peel away our freedoms like this. Thats why I support Prop C (http://www.mohealthfreedom.org/) and support Ed Martin (http://edmartinforco...

Oh my gosh, Rita, that sounds HORRIBLE. I'm so glad you didn't have any permanent damage from those incidents! Pain is so scary and it's even scarier when the people who should be caring for you do not give your concerns the proper attention. Good for you telling the doctor about what was going on! Even though you had to go through a lot of pain and trouble, i...

I have not been hospitalized for quite a while now; however, I have had several extremely bad experiences (Not at any BJC facility) which makes me very leery of being hospitalized anywhere. One of the times involved an IV that had been placed in my arm. This IV stung as the fluids went into my body (I had previously had several times when I required a potassium drip, and...

My last visit as a patient was about 2 mths ago, I was at Mo. Bap. I had back surgery. I can say this I have the BEST DR. (have for the last 6 yrs.) I received very good care from the Nursing Staff. Mason, I know what you mean about the social strains within a department. It's hard for even one person to give excellent care when you don't have the whole staff committed to working as a team! Hi Mason, Actually, each time I have been hospitalized, I have received excellent care. Didn't change the fact that I would have preferred to be engaged in the regular activities of my life, rather than having to be cared for in a hospital.
