What a wonderfully generous gift to the children of our community. Thanks for addressing one of the impediments to a student's success. Hats off to Bill and the Clarkson EyeCare Foundation.

Dale, I see where you're coming from, though I have to question - how would *you* suggest we care for those who have no health insurance? I'm entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - at least two of those inalienable rights would certainly be infringed upon if I were to walk into an ER with a major traumatic injury and be told, "Sorry, can...

I'm sorry you are tired of it, but your fatigue does not change the fact that socialism fails every time it is tried - and this is an attempt at socialism. It is arrogant to think that we are somehow more capable of making it work than all the other failed attempts in history. Individual rights do come before everything - these are our inalienable rights. Men and w...

I am tired of folks trying to scare others with the fear of socialism and loss of inalienable rights. What I find an affront to the dignity of humans is the current condition of health care. Mr. Warren seems to think that individual rights come before everything. While I certainly cherish my rights, I also recognise that living in a society means that you are not an island. ...

We do not have positive rights under the law - we may have them as a matter of conscience - I am compelled by faith to render help if I can, but I cannot be compelled by law to do so - at least under the current constitutional agreement. If we want to have a nationwide debate on a constitutional set of "positive rights" then let's have it, but we cannot prete...

Individual rights and freedoms are fine if they don't interfer with the well being of the society as a whole. If everyone in this country had the common sense to realize that health coverage is a necessity not a luxury it would not be a problem. Unfortunately, that is not the case. We must have mandatory health coverage or we will all suffer.

Dale, I understand your argument about rights and freedoms. I've had many discussions, as I'm sure you have, about health reform with friends, family, and co-workers. One problem with arguing against health reform based on the freedom principle is that the government has already established that health care organizations are not free to decide to give or wit...

Respectfully - unfair is not unconstitutional, but requiring people to purchase something that they may not want is. It is unwise to not have insurance, but being unwise is not a matter for the government to involve itself. We cannot peel away our freedoms like this. Thats why I support Prop C (http://www.mohealthfreedom.org/) and support Ed Martin (http://edmartinforco...

On August 3, Missouri voters will be asked to vote on whether or not federal health care reform should be upheld in the state. Missouri is the first state to hold such a vote, and while there are differences of opinion among attorneys as to what the vote will mean, the St. Louis Business Journal recently published the following commentary by Steven Lipstein, President a...

The movement to back off prostate cancer screenings to avoid being overly aggressive in treatment concerns me. I get that there are times when it might be wiser to avoid treatment, especially when age is a consideration, but I really don't understand taking a stance to discourage younger men (in their 40s) from monitoring their prostate health and giving themselves the best...

Stacey, it's a great question. I'm sure you realize there are very few healthcare providers, whether they are doctors, nurses, or other healthcare professionals, that don't wish to be better communicators. Unfortunately the demands of clinical care are such that many of us don't take the time we should to understand what patients and their families do a...

Mr. Bynum, First off let me say how sorry I am that your friend had such a challenging stay at whichever hospital she was admitted, but I am glad to hear that things turned out okay for her. Now in response to your questions, the use of hospitalists is a growing trend, with some accounts showing the number of hospitalist tripling from 1995 to 2006. Studies have shown that...

I was looking through my 401k plan and noticed that 1/2% of my portfolio is made up of "British American Tobacco Plc" http://quicktake.morningstar.com/syndication/holdings.aspx?cn=GLG117&symbol=VGTSX As a participant in an employer sponsored plan, I'm unable to cast a vote at the annual shareholder meetings of the plan. I don't know the answer to your question, Cary, but this was my last hospital experience, a little more than 18 months ago: My internist admitted me through the Barnes-Jewish Hospital ER and she (or another internist from her practice) saw me every single day, including over the weekend. I was in for six days. I did see other hospital physicians and specialists, but MY ...

I don't know if BJC has any protocal for cleaning computer equipment. I just read an article ("http://www.smartplanet.com/technology/blog/rethinking-healthcare/the-fight-against-hospital-infection-hits-your-pc/1403/") about the need to consider how PC equipment may contribute to spreading of disease in a hospital. As the article noted the use of PC equipment will incr...

A friend of mine just spent several days in a hospital in intense pain without a diagnosis (admitted through the ER). Her primary care doc apparently no longer handles inpatient care. The hospitalist she was assigned to never visited her over the course of three or so days. There was at least one misdiagnosis that might could have been avoided. To make a long story short...

Why when lung cancer is listed as the #1 killer of all cancers is there very little, if any, side effects or after effects listed? Even the Doctor's comments are few, and support groups are almost non-existent.

Everything in life is about communication. I realize that health care professionals for the most part do a really good job of the medical part, but I agree with Kathleen that better communication would go a long way in making medicine better. So since this isn't rocket science I have to wonder why in this day and age it is still a problem for doctors and nurses to un...
